WAKESURFING 101

Big Waves. Big Fun. Better Boating.

WAKESURFING 101 Big Waves. Big Fun. Better Boating.

There's nothing quite like getting behind the boat, finding the sweet spot in the wave and letting go of the rope.

Whether you're learning your first surf session, teaching a friend or working on your next trick, wake-surfing combines technology, skill and a whole lot of fun.

WHAT MAKES A GREAT WAVE?

A great wake-surf wave doesn't happen by accident. There's a lot of technology working behind the scenes.

Modern wake boats use a combination of:

Ballast

Hull design

Surf systems

Wake-shaping technology

Speed control

Adjustable wedges

Together, these systems allow the driver to customize the wave around the rider.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE SURF

Here's the cool part.

When a boat moves through the water, the hull displaces water and creates a wake. Add ballast, and the boat sits deeper in the water.

Change the boat's attitude, and you change how the hull interacts with the water.

Adjust the surf system, and you can redirect and shape the water moving behind the boat.

The rider then uses the energy of that wave to maintain momentum.

Basically?

You're not just being pulled behind the boat.

You're surfing the energy created by the boat moving through the water.

WHY WAKE SURFING IS SO DIFFERENT

Unlike wakeboarding, wake-surfing doesn't require the rider to stay attached to the boat once they're up.

That's what makes it so unique.

You get up with the rope...

Find the wave...

Then let go.

From there, the rider uses body position, the board and the wave itself to stay in the pocket.

That's the magic of wake-surfing.

The boat creates the wave.

The rider creates the ride.

MALIBU + AXIS: BUILT AROUND THE WAVE

Today's wake boats are a long way from the boats of the past.

Malibu and Axis have built their boats around the idea that the wake should be customizable.

Features like Malibu's Surf Gate® and Power Wedge® allow riders to adjust the characteristics of their wave.

That means different riders can create different experiences.

Beginner?

Create a comfortable, predictable wave.

Experienced rider?

Dial in the wave for your riding style.

Multiple riders?

Customize the experience throughout the day.

BUT WHAT ABOUT THE LAKE?

You've probably seen the conversation around wake boats and their impact on lakes.

It's an important conversation—and one that responsible boaters should understand.

But here's the good news:

You don't have to choose between wake-surfing and taking care of the lake.

You can do both.

Wake energy interacts differently with the water depending on factors such as water depth, distance from shore and the characteristics of the lake.

In certain shallow areas, waves can interact more strongly with the lake bottom.

That's why smart wake surfers give themselves plenty of room.

FIND THE OPEN WATER

One of the easiest ways to be a responsible wake-surfer?

Give your wake room to travel.

When you're riding:

✓ Head into deeper, open water.

✓ Stay away from shorelines and docks.

✓ Avoid shallow areas.

✓ Follow local wake regulations.

✓ Give other boaters plenty of space.

✓ Know the lake you're riding on.

Think of it this way:

Find the open water.

Find your wave.

Have fun.

SAFETY IS PART OF THE SPORT

A great day on the water starts before the rider ever gets behind the boat.

BEFORE YOU RIDE:

🦺 Wear a properly fitted life jacket

Use the appropriate U.S. Coast Guard-approved PFD for the activity.

👀 Have a spotter

The driver should focus on operating the boat while another person watches the rider.

🤝 Communicate

Make sure the driver and rider understand basic hand signals before getting started.

🌊 Know your surroundings

Watch for other boats, swimmers, docks, shallow water and changing conditions.

🚫 Never mix alcohol and watersports

Save the drinks for after the boat is back at the dock.

TAKE CARE OF THE PLACES YOU RIDE

For most boaters, the lake is more than a place to wake-surf.

It's where you:

🎣 Fish.

🏊 Swim.

☀️ Spend summer afternoons.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Make memories with your family.

🚤 Spend time with friends.

And that's exactly why taking care of the water matters.

Follow the rules.

Respect other boaters.

Choose appropriate areas to ride.

And leave the lake ready for the next person.

Being a responsible wake-surfer doesn't make the sport less fun.

It helps keep the fun going.
